Livable Frederick is the County’s vision for a vibrant and unique community where people live, work, and thrive while enjoying a strong sense of place and belonging. Part of achieving that vision is the County’s commitment to respond to climate change.

Frederick County’s climate goals (adopted by the County Council in July 2020) are to reduce county-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 50 percent from 2010 levels by 2030 and 100 percent no later than 2050.

Frederick County is taking strong action to address its goals. Examples of actions include a solar array, installed on a closed landfill, that powers nine electric buses and multiple County buildings; a program to provide energy efficient retrofits for people with low and moderate incomes; promotion of solar co-ops for residents to leverage their bulk purchasing power; a solar array at the Ballenger-McKinney Waste Water Treatment Plant;  and a Forest Resource Ordinance to sustain existing tree cover.
