ICLEI – International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives – is the first and largest global network of local governments devoted to solving the world’s sustainability challenges. ICLEI’s standards, tools, and programs – such as greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory protocols, ClearPath GHG accounting tool, and learning cohorts – credibly, transparently, and robustly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve lives and livelihoods and protect natural resources in the communities we serve.

Active in more than 100 countries, ICLEI supports local governments to deliver their self-determined sustainability policy and drive local action for low-emission, nature-based, equitable, resilient, and circular development. ICLEI’s members and team of experts work together through peer exchange, partnerships, and capacity building to create systemic change for urban sustainability.

If you’re a local government practitioner or consultant working on local climate action and sustainability or an elected official known as a champion of this cause, chances are your efforts are based on an approach pioneered by ICLEI and its local government network members. In the DMV, ICLEI members include the District of Columbia; Montgomery County; Cities of Alexandria, College Park, Gaithersburg, Greenbelt, and Rockville; and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG).
